Kells Irish Festival Grows Over Two Decades into One of Largest in Northwest

Kells St. Patrick’s Day festival, with its authentic Irish music, family entertainment and food, has become one of the largest in Portland. This year, Kells will offer three days of merriment from March 17-19.

The three-day celebration begins on Thursday March 17th (St Patrick’s Day) at 10 a.m. featuring Irish dancing, pipe bands, live Irish music, food and beverages. Family Day welcomes all ages with no admission charge on Saturday from 11 a.m. until 5p.m. Unique this year will be a showing of some of the original artwork from the Oscar nominated “The Secret of Kells” during Family Day. There will be Irish dancing, arts, crafts, complimentary Irish cheese samples, face painting and Irish wolfhounds for the enjoyment of everyone.

2011 Festival Calendar

March 17 (St. Patrick’s Day)—Pub open 10 a.m. – 2 a.m. with live entertainment starting at 12:30 p.m. Festival tent open 10 a.m.-midnight, free admission to lunch area from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Live entertainment with dancers, pipers and bands throughout the day, including U277.

March 18 (Friday)—Pub open 11:30 a.m. – 2 a.m. with live entertainment starting at 8:30 p.m. Festival tent, 5:30 p.m.-midnight. New this year is an Oregon vs. Ireland live boxing match at 7:30 pm.

March 19 (Saturday)—Pub open 7 a.m. – 2 a.m. with live entertainment starting at 6:30pm. Festival tent, 11 a.m.-midnight. Families admitted to festival tent from 11 a.m.- 5 p.m.

Kells co-owners Gerard and Lucille McAleese invite one and all to come to Portland to enjoy the 20th Annual St Patrick’s Day Festival: “If you can’t go to Ireland, come to Kells.”
