ThinkExist.com: Quotes for FatherÂs Day
MADRID (PRWEB) June 18, 2004
The first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910, was not the commercial celebration it is today. The sentiment, however, was certainly the same.
Envisioned years earlier by Sonora Dodd to honor her widowed father, the first Father’s Day was simply a local celebration. It was not until 1966 that President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June a national holiday.
Much has changed since Freud pointed out “I cannot think of any need in childhood as strong as the need for a father’s protection.” These days the figure of the father has been somewhat tarnished by the difficulties of modern life. Yet fathers still matter even if their mythical glow has faded.
They no longer fit the traditional molds that society had established, and often a true father is not even a father at all. As Alice Walker reflects ÂIt no longer bothers me that I may be constantly searching for father figures; by this time, I have found several and dearly enjoyed knowing them all.Â
At ThinkExist.com we have chosen to honor all kinds of fathers with a selection of the best quotes from history and today. For as Lydia M. Child has noted “Blessed indeed is the man who hears many gentle voices call him father!”

You may have not intended to do so, but I think you have managed to express the state of mind that a lot of people are in. The sense of wanting to help, but not knowing how or where, is something a lot of us are going through.
